About the Instructor:
Beginning with the 2002-2003 school year, we are pleased to welcome Michael Rigsby, Shodan. Mike is a United States Judo Inc. Class E certified coach. During his high school years, Mike studied Judo at the YMCA in Beaumont with Sensi Hal Hubbard. He rose through the ranks and was awarded his black belt at a competition in 1969. He continued his study during college and also began a study of Aikido receiving a rank of Ikkyu (first brown) in 1972. In 1975, his job took him to Orange, Texas where he taught Judo, Aikido, and self-defense courses at the YMCA for 5 years.
In 2003, Mike was certified as a Class E coach under the new USA Judo coach certification. He continues to enjoy and practice both Judo and Aikido. Having recently relocated to the Nacogdoches area, he became involved with the SFA Judo club in 2002.
Karl Gies, Mike's sensi, once said about amatuers, "the future of Judo is not in the hands of the Olympians; but, the hands of the judo instructors, such as Mike, who teach for the love of the art."
